Do You Need Help Organizing A Playroom?

 Does this picture look familiar?

Organizing a playroom can be a daunting task for any parent.  We love our children and we want them to have all the things that make them happy.  However, in the same case as the rest of your house, if you bring new things in, each item needs to be assigned a new home or you have instant clutter.  When it comes to toys, we don’t usually think about where it will live, once you bring it into your home.

Many times the playroom is the forgotten room, especially if it is a bonus room upstairs where it is “Out of sight out of mind.”

Recently I was contacted by one of my faithful clients, asking if I could tackle their daughter’s playroom upstairs.  I jumped to the challenge to help these parents and their precious girls.

If you are wanting to organized a playroom, I shot these before and after videos to inspire you and to help you see what you can accomplish on a very tight budget.

I hope you enjoyed the videos.

This project proved that my opinions are correct.  If their toys are organized, all of their toys become new again!  The girls rarely played up there because it was such a chaotic space.  I let the girls help me with some of the minor things while I discussed with them why I was there and how I was going to make this a fun place to be.  Afterwards, I sent them downstairs until I was finished.

When they came up and saw their space, there was this instant wow factor on their face and instantly they wanted to run and play!  I laughingly said…..nooooot sooooo fast!  Let’s talk first.  I walked them through every single thing I had done and showed them that everything they owned had a new home.  I asked them if they could keep it this way and the roared YES!

I then tested them by saying, ok I want you to show me where all of the little mermaid Polly Pockets are.  ( The open bin in the after video.  They were separated in baggies for easy access.)  The youngest being only 3 jumped up and when straight to it and brought it to me.  She got big high fives and hugs for knowing where the Polly Pocket’s home was.  She dropped the baggie on the floor waiting for her next test.

I played a game where I say:  “I spy something out of place!  The first person to find it wins the race!”  And I waited.  She looked down and saw the baggie of Polly Pockets, grabbed the bag and put it back into the appropriate bin.  I was thrilled a three year old knew exactly where to find what she wanted and where to put it back.  We continued the games until I was convinced that they knew where everything was and how to keep it that way.  They were great fun to work with and now they can enjoy this room in a whole new way.

Mom and dad were happy with the results.  The only thing they have left to complete in the room is to add labels to the bins and hang the pretty artwork they have for the room.  Other than that, this was a huge success.

Francene, It may seem like play but it really is an exercise to make sure they know where the toys are located and how to put them back. Mommy was with us during this exercise and she is continuing it with them. They are allowed to go play and make a mess, but they are instructed to cleanup when they are finished. Knowing where everything belongs, makes clean up much easier. As they get older, they will be more mindful of the mess and will want it straight on their own. It is simplly teaching them to care for their things. It does work, but mommy is ultimately the one to make sure it continues.

  2. I loved your game afterwards. While you play with the children, they are likely to co-operate. However, I learned after all my continual organization, that children will revert to playing the way they want with no regard for your rules. Hehe. Sorry to put a dampener on your mood.

Great post! If I had a playroom this would definitely help. As it is, I’ll apply it to the kids’ bedrooms instead 🙂
